AI search & AEO glossary
Plain-English definitions for the terms behind answer engine optimization, AI visibility, and how businesses get mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Also: AEO
AEO is the practice of structuring your business's website, content, and public listings so that AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can understand, trust, and mention your business when customers ask for recommendations.
Where traditional SEO targets the ranked list of blue links on a search results page, AEO targets the synthesized answer an AI model writes. It favors clear, factual, well-structured content; consistent name, address, and phone details; genuine reviews; and schema markup that removes ambiguity about who you are and what you do.
AI Optimization (AIO)
Also: AIO
AIO is the broad work of making a business easier for AI systems to find, evaluate, and cite — covering content, structured data, reputation signals, and how your business appears across the web the AI models draw from.
AIO is an umbrella term that includes AEO (answer-engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization). It is less about a single tactic and more about a measurable outcome: how often and how positively AI systems mention your business.
AI visibility
AI visibility is a measure of how often and how favorably AI assistants mention your business when customers ask them for recommendations in your category and location.
A business can rank well on Google and still have low AI visibility, because AI models synthesize answers from many sources rather than returning a ranked link list. AI visibility is what Vextrail measures as the AI Relevance Score.
AI Relevance Score
An AI Relevance Score is a 0–100 number that measures how visible your business is across the major AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — when customers ask category and location questions.
Vextrail generates real customer-style questions for your category and location, sends them to each AI assistant with web search enabled, then checks whether your business name, aliases, or website domain appear in the answers and how positively. The combined result is a single score you can track month over month.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Also: GEO
GEO is the practice of optimizing content so that generative AI systems cite it as a source in their answers, with an emphasis on research-style, information-dense content.
GEO is sometimes used for academic and content-heavy publishers, while AEO tends to be used for businesses and local intent. Both share the same goal: being the source an AI model draws on when it writes an answer.
LLM citation
An LLM citation is a reference a large language model (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude) makes to a source, brand, or website inside the answer it generates.
When an AI assistant mentions your business by name, that mention functions like a citation. Getting cited more often, and more positively, is the practical outcome AEO and AIO aim for.
Answer engine
An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a generated answer rather than a list of links — ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are the most common examples today.
Answer engines still draw on web pages and their own training data, but the user sees a synthesized answer, not a ranked results page. That shift is why visibility inside the answer itself now matters for businesses.
ChatGPT SEO
ChatGPT SEO refers to the set of practices that make a business more likely to be mentioned when a customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation.
There is no separate algorithm to submit to — ChatGPT draws on web sources and its training. So ChatGPT SEO is really AEO applied to OpenAI's models: clear, well-structured content, consistent business details, reviews, and authoritative mentions around the web.
Structured data for AI
Structured data for AI is machine-readable markup (such as schema.org JSON-LD) that tells AI assistants and search engines exactly what your business is, where it is, and what it offers.
Structured data removes ambiguity. When your name, address, phone, services, hours, and reviews are marked up consistently, AI models are more likely to describe your business accurately and cite it correctly.
AI search optimization
AI search optimization is the overall practice of improving how your business appears across AI-powered search and answer platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and AI search results.
It combines elements of traditional SEO (clean, crawlable, well-structured pages) with AEO tactics (concise answers, structured data, reputation) so your business is findable and correctly described wherever customers use AI.
